Land Rover Discovery (04 - 09)

Land Rover produced this Discovery generation with the intention of it being regarded as a complete all-rounder. They made huge strides in terms of durability, on and off-road driving and interior quality. The cabin is spacious and comfortable with plenty of leg and head room. The rear seats, in particular, are versatile as they can fold flat to transform it into a two, three, four, five, six or seven-seater. It is also well designed; instrumentation is clear and easy to hand while there is a high level of the technology. The Discovery is an exceptional off-roader while being more than decent on the tarmac. Handling is solid and there is a good feedback from the steering. Ride quality is good on and off-road; you rarely feel any of the lumps and bumps you normally would on rough surfaces. The off-road system, Terrain Response, has settings for gravel, grass, snow, sand and mud. It raises the Discovery 3’s height and alters the suspension to ensure as comfortable a drive as possible.

Look out for

•  Some complaints of faulty suspension due to wiring problems

What we like

•  The interior feels top-quality and refined

•  Spacious and comfortable cabin

•  One of the best off-roaders around and competent on-road

•  Really high level of standard kit and safety equipment

•  Impressive range of powerful, capable engines

•  The seats are versatile, each can fold flat to the floor

What we don't like

•  The fuel economy is a bit of a disappointment
